Glee Remains Popular in Spring Season

On Tuesday, April 13th, the Fox hit series, Glee, returned to television. In case you've been living under a rock for the past 6 months, here's what Glee is all about:

Cult Hit Glee Hits Mainstream

High school musical comedy Glee nearly doubled its audience on its return to television after a four-month absence, drawing 13.7 million viewers, the Fox network says.

The award-winning series about a group of misfit students in a struggling competition choir saw its biggest audience ever last week, positioning the TV show for a move from cult fan status to mainstream hit.

Fox said that Tuesday's episode of Glee, which stars Victoria's Cory Monteith, outperformed the prior season average for the show by 88 per cent in total viewers, or 13.7 million people compared to 7.3 million.

Glee, a quirky, larger-than-life comedy series that features its cast singing cover versions of pop, Broadway and rap songs, has already won Golden Globe, Peabody and Screen Actors Guild awards since its 2009 debut.

The show had been off the air since December 2009 to make way for the annual Fox ratings juggernaut American Idol.

Two albums of Glee songs have hit music charts in the U.S., Australia, Ireland and the U.K., and more than 4.5 million songs from the show have been downloaded in the United States alone.

Cast members will embark on a sold-out U.S. concert tour in the summer.

Singing competition American Idol remains the most-watched U.S. TV show with an average audience in its current ninth season of 24.9 million viewers. (Times Colonist)

This week's episode airing at 9 EDT/8 CDT on Fox will feature the music of pop icon Madonna. What does she have to say about it? Read on:

Madonna Offers Approval

Madonna has given her thumbs-up to "Glee's" upcoming episode featuring her music.

"I think Mr. Schuester is very cute," Madonna said in a statement, referencing Matthew Morrisons's "Glee" club leader/teacher character at McKinley High School.

"And I'm glad he's doing such a good job empowering all the girls," the Material Mom added.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, on April 20, "Glee" devotes their entire hour to Madonna songs in an episode titled, "The Power of Madonna."

The episode follows Mr. Schuester as he expresses concern that the ladies of the glee club are being disrespected and bullied by the male members.

In order to give the girls confidence, Mr. Shue asks the glee club girls to tackle Madonna songs "in the hopes that the girls embrace Madonna's strength, independence and confidence so that the guys will see the errors of their misogynistic ways," FOX said in a statement.

Among the tracks performed on the episode are "Express Yourself," "Like A Prayer" and "Vogue," the latter track which fans were able to watch during a commercial break from Tuesday night's spring season premiere of "Glee."

The "Vogue" clip, starring Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester, Amber Riley as Mercedes and Chris Colfer as Kurt, has already become an Internet sensation, as a fitting tribute to Madonna's original clip. (YahooTV)

Tiger Woods Returns to Golf

Tiger Woods has decided to return to the world of golf with his debut in the Masters Golf Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club. This decision has evoked many different responses.

According to the Canadian Press, some sports psychologists believe that it is a victory for both the man and the sport. Sylvain Guimond states that "the disgraced golfer will come out a winner whatever the outcome of his return to the links." His return to the Masters has increased the tournament's TV ratings significantly only in the first day of competition. SportsCenter's live coverage of Woods' first tee shot Thursday afternoon at drew a 1.1 rating and spiked 267 percent from the same time period last year. (Seattle Post-Intelligencer)

Others refuse to support Tiger's return. The Atlantic provides "5 Reasons We're Not Rooting For Tiger." The article points out five common arguments for supporting Tiger in his quest for victory at the Masters and indicates reasons why those are not sound arguments. For example:

3. You say: "We're rooting for history."

We say: According to this logic, you want Tiger to win because you want this Master's tournament to be historic. Fine. If your goal is to make Sunday, April 11th, 2010, a memorable day, then by all means, root for Tiger. But there are other ways to make this weekend one for the ages: ask out the cute girl you've had a crush on for weeks; start training for a triathalon; call your best friend from grade school whom you haven't seen in a decade. That way, 4/11/2010 will be memorable for being the first day of the rest of your life—not the Sunday an arrogant golfer achieved a great personal victory despite the intense pain he inflicted on others.

The Controversy Continues

A Nike advertisement featuring Tiger Woods has recently been released. Not only is his appearance controversial, but the ad also features the voice of his deceased father.  Earl Woods died of prostate cancer in 2006. Some people think that it is sick - Nike is capitalizing on Woods' current issues for advertisement of their unrelated products. Others claim it's weird how his dead dad's disembodied voice is the main point of the commercial. It's like he's talking to a ghost. Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, states, "Most of the people I've talked to and in a lot of the stuff I've read, the word 'creepy' is the word that comes up the most. It's one thing to bring Dad's advice in, another to do an apology. To mix this whole thing into a Nike ad really strikes me as really bizarre."

On the other hand, some support this ad wholly. Donny Deutsch, chairman of the Deutsch ad agency claims, "It is a brilliant marketing stroke to acknowledge that the brand has changed a bit." Vada Manager, chief executive of Manager Global Consulting, was a senior executive with Nike for 12 years, and had worked with Woods in the Nike golf campaign. He thought that the concept of the ad was smart, because Woods' father had such a large influence on him. They were always together at Nike. Manager also says the ad conveys what Woods has said, in that he is "getting back to the core values that his parents instilled, that he admitted himself he had strayed away from."

Celebrity Deaths

This is a little different for this column, but I'm curious: What place do you feel fans have after the death of a celebrity? Last year was a particularly bad year for celebrity deaths - Brittany Murphy, Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze, John Hughes, etc - and this year has just gotten started, with the deaths of Andrew Koenig (probably best known as the son of the actor who played Chekov in the original Star Trek series) and Corey Haim. After a high-publicity death, fans are often faced with the desire to do something to honor the celebrities who they have long admired, but don't know what's appropriate. Often, money is raised for a cause that the person in question was either involved with, or that would have benefited them (cancer research, depression hotlines, etc.).

Have you ever felt like doing something - donating to a cause, or maybe sending a condolence letter to the family? If so, have you ever gone through with it? I want to hear about your experiences.

Michael Jackson - again

I'm sure many of us remember the death of Michael Jackson last summer, and all of the controversy surrounding it (as well as his life in general): Was it a suicide, an accident, or murder? Should the doctor who prescribed the medication be held responsible for his overdose? Was he guilty of child molestation, or was it just a ploy for money and publicity? The questions can go on and on, and regardless of your opinions of him - as a person, a celebrity, or a musician - you cannot deny that, for several weeks, his death was at the forefront of a lot of (at least American) media.

And then, time passed. Other things happened, and Michael Jackson stopped being the most important thing going on (though many questioned whether his death was ever the most important thing going on). Now, however, three of his bodyguards have spoken out in an interview on Good Morning America. A summary, as well as a link to the interview, is below.

From the Daily Mail:

He was one of the world's most famous performers, and being in the limelight had quite an effect on Michael Jackson as his bodyguards explained on U.S. TV today.

The three men - Mike Garcia, Bill Whitfield and Javon "BJ" Beard - revealed that the late star's life was full of "stress, paranoia and pain."

They also said the star had two girlfriends during the time they worked for him and insisted he was NOT a child abuser.

Appearing on ABC's Good Morning America the security team, referred to as The Inner Circle, were asked if they believed Jackson was a paedophile, to which all three emphatically replied 'No.'.

Bill Whitfield said: 'Being a man, men know men, and we [were] around him long enough to know he was a man.'

While Mike Garcia added: 'He had desires of women like we do. He had lovers.

'In the cars that we had, we had a curtain that covered the back seat. You couldn't see in the back seat. They talked back there, they didn't do nothing out of bounds.

'You can hear the kissing.'

The men said the pop superstar had at least two girlfriends during the two year period they were employed to look after him, and they chaperoned Jackson and his lovers like a pair of teenagers.

The threesome also said that Michael Jackson was an "awesome" father, who did all he could to shield his three children, Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket from the media glare.

Jackson gave them the task of protecting his children from seeing images of their father on magazine covers.

Whitfield said: 'I'll be ahead of him, because I know he's coming this way, and I'm looking at magazine racks that may have something about him on them and I'll turn it around.

'Sometimes he's seen them, and you would actually see him take it and turn them around so the kids didn't see them.'

Garcia added: 'The kids were constantly saying, "I love you, Daddy." They were like four buddies'

And Whitfield said the children were very "polite" and "well mannered."

But they recounted "sad" moments too - such as the time Jackson held a birthday party for one of his children, and only Jackson, the teacher, the nanny and the three bodyguards were there with no other children present.

In the two-part interview, the men also claimed that he took out his financial frustrations on them.

'We were asked to leave hotels because the credit card on file was denied,' Bill Whitfield said.

'The bill wasn't paid,' added Garcia.

And they said Jacko - who died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50 following a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs and propofol - would often fly into fits of rage.

'He got so frustrated he threw my cell phone out the window, through the window and broke the glass,' Whitfield said.

'And he looked at me and said, "Bill, you're going to need a new phone."'

Super Bowl XLIV

It may seem weird to be covering a major sporting event here at Scandalicious, but it actually involved a lot of celebrities!

The Players and their Girls

Kim Kardashian, from "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" on E!, tweeted about her night at the Super Bowl: "Who dat there gonna beat them Saints!!!! We won the SUPERBOWL!!!!!!" She even posted a picture of her boyfriend, Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints, with the trophy on Twitpic.

According to an article People Magazine, the Super Bowl was a family affair. Kim brought her mother and brother to Miami with her and dined with Bush's family a few nights before the game.

Reggie Bush was drafted by the Saints in 2006, after he chose not to play college football his senior year at USC. He was the second overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and has been playing for the Saints since. He started dating Kim Kardashian in 2007, and is still dating her after only a small split from July to September 2009.

The happy couple at the game on Sunday, Februrary 7th. From People.com.

Kendra Wilkinson (best known for "The Girls Next Door", also on E!), on the other hand, was less excited about the outcome of the Super Bowl. As the wife of the Indiannapolis Colts' wide receiver, she was saddened by the loss. That wasn't the only think that upset her, however. According to an article in People Magazine:

It was an emotional scene after the Super Bowl: Kendra Wilkinson in tears as she rushed out of the stadium holding her baby son.

But the reality star says she wasn't upset over the Indianapolis Colts' loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in a game in which her husband Hank Baskett mishandled an on-side kick, leading to a Saints scoring drive.

"I wasn't cryin cuz of the damn game it's cuz the paparazzi have no soul... they wouldn't leave me n family alone!!!!" she wrote on her Twitter page Monday.

She added: "People like to twist this stuff... we asked them to stop cuz of the baby n they were way too close n they didn't care at allllllll."

She did enjoy watching her hubby play with her baby, however (seen on Twitpic).

Follow these links to find both Kim and Kendra on Twitter.

Tiger Woods - What’s the Deal?

So here at Scandalicious, we not only cover the typical stars (heiresses, actors, models, etc), but also the sports stars. One sports star who's been getting a lot of press recently is Tiger Woods.

So What Exactly Did He Do?

I suppose Tiger's ordeal started the day after Thanksgiving, when he crashed his car outside of his Florida home at around 2:30 in the morning. Woods lost control of his vehicle after hitting a fire hydrant, and his wife, Elin, had to smash the back window with a golf club in order to get him out. This raised a lot of questions, such as: What golf club did Elin use to get him out? A driver? An iron? Was it one of his competition clubs, or just an old one lying around the house? Also, what was Tiger doing out at 2:30 in the morning? Was he drunk? This is what brought the original attention to the Woods family. Read more about Tiger Woods' car accident

After that, it became known that Woods had been having an affair with Jamiee Grubbs, a bartender and cast member of Tool Academy on VH1.

The Effects

A man who used to be so many people's idol (I'll admit, I looked up to him), has committed an awful crime. Definitely lost some respect in my book. Regardless, Woods was voted male player of the year by the Golf Writers Association of America by an overwhelming margin over Steve Stricker (see article here). This was his tenth time receiving the award in his 13 years as a professional golfer. He was also named the AP Athlete of the Decade. He beat out many others, such as Lance Armstrong and Roger Federer for the title. Impressive, considering almost half of the votes were cast after his car crash on November 27th (see article here).

In contrast, Tag Heurer has dropped Tiger Woods as a spokesperson for the company. He has been followed by negative press since the incident, and it has affected his popularity among the public. People who used to idolize him have lost respect.

So What Does This Mean for Him Now?

Woods is taking an indefinite leave of absence from professional golf. His statement on TigerWoods.com:

"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."

Brittany Murphy Dead at Age 32

By Stephen M. Silverman

Posted on People.com

Brittany Murphy died of cardiac arrest early Sunday morning, after her mother had found her unconscious in the shower, according to a report by TMZ. The actress was 32.

It is reported that a call went out to 911 from Murphy's Los Angeles home at 8 a.m. Attempts to revive her were not successful. A spokesperson for Cedars Sinai Medical Center confirmed to PEOPLE that Murphy died at the facility Sunday at 10:04 a.m.

The actress's rep, Nicole Perna, said in a statement Sunday afternoon, "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

In addition to The White Hotel and Clueless, the Atlanta-born Murphy costarred in 8 Mile with Eminem, and Girl, Interrupted, with Angelina Jolie. Her first Hollywood job, at age 14, was as the star of the series Drexel's Class.

In May of 2007, she married her White Hotel director, Simon Monjack.

Before meeting the British writer-director, Murphy had been engaged twice. She split with best-boy grip Joe Macaluso in August 2006, and ended her engagement to Jeff Kwatinetz, CEO of the Hollywood talent agency The Firm, in 2004.

She previously dated Ashton Kutcher, her costar in 2003's Just Married.

On Sunday Kutcher Tweeted, "see you on the other side kid ... 2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."
