Better To Give

There is no greater feeling that the feeling of giving! Be it to a family member, lifelong friend or new found love, the emotion you get from handing that present over, can't be beat. Unfortunately, sometimes it's not so easy to find that great gift! We're here to help you find that perfect gift! Maybe it's your community or world you'd like to give back to, instead. If that's the case, we'll help you find those volunteer opportunities and charities when you aren't sure where to start!
Recently a 4th grade boy from my church, Mason, was diagnosed with leukemia. My mom was looking for some awareness bracelets (like yellow Livestrong bracelets) when I realized how confusing it is to try and find out the awareness color-usually expressed with ribbons-for different illnesses.

What's With All The Ribbons?

These are only a few of the awareness colors out there. Lots of them vary by the charity you are ordering from. As there were over 20 official ribbon colors I found I was only able to present a few here!

The most common is the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon, but this ribbon can also stand for birth parents or childhood cancers:

The yellow ribbon is commonly seen as a magnet on the back of cars symbolizing support for troops, but it is also the awareness color for Missing in Action/Prisoner of War, suicide prevention, adoptive parents, amber alerts, bladder cancer, endometriosis or just a symbol of hope:

Commonly associated with HIV/ AIDS, the red ribbon also is a symbol for heart disease, stroke, substance abuse (ie. Red Ribbon Week in schools):

A purple ribbon stands for the awareness of pancreatic, testicular, and thyroid cancer, domestic violence, ADD, Alzheimer’s, religious tolerance, animal abuse, the victims of 9/11 including the police and firefighters, Crohn's disease, colitis, cystic fibrosis, lupus, and fibromyalgia:

What You Can Do

Although awareness ribbons have been labeled as "slacktivism" (showing support without making an effort of time or money), wearing a ribbon really can help those affected by whatever cause by letting them know there are people out there who care even if their supporters don't have the resources to help in other ways.

You can display ribbons on social networking sites, wear them on your clothes, and slap them on the back of your car!

I have a pink ribbon on the collar of my letterman jacket and this is the orange ribbon I have on my Myspace in support of Mason!
